The Lugana wine is indissolubly tied to the DOC zone it comes from, Lugana, an area close to the southern shore of Lake Garda which stretches from Desenzano and Sirmione up to Peschiera and further extends into the land surrounding the municipalities of Pozzolengo and Lonato. This area of suggestive landscape beauty corresponds to what was once Selva Lucana, a marsh wood sheltering wild pigs, deer and fallow deer. Nowadays this stretch of land appears deforested and covered with vineyards cultivated in a peculiar kind of soil that could become either muddy after an intense rainfall or as hard as a stone after a period of drought.
The high quality of Lugana wines is strictly dependent on the peculiar pedoclimatic condition of this vinegrowing area and, mainly, on the soil where the vines are grown: underneath the clay and limestone layer, that contributes in giving body to the wine, there's a glacial morainic soil enriched with mineral salts which enable the grapes to preserve a good level of acidity combined with sapidity. The other peculiarity of this area is represented by the high humidity coming from the nearby Lake Garda and covering the whole area. The combination of these two factors strongly conditions the planting pattern of the vineyards realized according to specific planting criteria: the high humidity from the lake forces, in fact, both to keep the space between the rows wide enough to allow for a good air circulation, and, at the same time, to maintain adequate distance between the vine canopy and the ground. The vine mainly grown here is Trebbiano di Lugana, which has acclimatised in this area for several centuries. This is also the grape variety our Lugana DOC wine is mostly made from. The Regulations on the production of Lugana allow Trebbiano to be blended with up to 10% other non-aromatic white varieties.
